Thou Shalt Honor Thy Father And Mother
In preference to all other and lesser stations, in life, God has given special recognition to fathers and mothers by commanding not merely to love our parents but also to honor them. As regards brothers and sisters and neighbors in general, He commands nothing higher than to love them. In this way He distinguishes parents from all persons on earth, chooses them and sets them next to Himself. For to honor is a much higher thing than to love. Honor includes not only love but also respect, humility, and awe, directed, one might say, toward a hidden majesty of theirs. Next to God, parents are to occupy the highest place in our lives. Concerning parents, they should recognize their responsibility toward their children by providing material support and insuring spiritual training, also according to God’s command. The promise of blessing, through obedience to the Fourth Commandment, says something about the high priority God places on family ordained according to His divine plan. Martin Luther Large Catechism
